Getting Business to Come to You, 2nd edition by Paul and Sarah Edwards and Laura Clampitt Douglas. Reviewed by Lorette Pruden

The first edition of this book was published in 1997—the Edwards’ have been helping small and home-based businesses for a long time. This tome (there’s no other word for it) is devoted to practical techniques for attracting business. They quote Georgia O’Keefe: “You have to get talked about to have your work sell.” Notice the phrase is “have your work sell”, not “sell your work”.

One thing I like is their emphasis on marketing to fit your own style. No matter how great a marketing idea is, we won’t do it if we dread it. Here’s a great example from one of their hundreds of lists and tips: “I would feel comfortable and would enjoy using
Direct selling, by phone or in person
Free consultations, working directly with prospects
Networking, making business contacts at meetings and social gatherings
Sales speeches and seminars, selling to a group
Volunteering, contributing what I offer to trade, civic or business concerns
Walking around the neighborhood, going door-to-door to meet my clients.” (p. 127)

Pick one or two, and do them!

This is a must-have reference book. It’s a source of so many ideas that, if you pick a few, and do them, you cannot fail to have business coming to you!
